Aviva Stadium revolutionises fan experience with major network upgrade

The Aviva Stadium has gone live with a Juniper network, designed and deployed by Agile Networks

In a move set to transform the digital experience for sports fans and concert-goers, Dublin’s iconic Aviva Stadium has completed a comprehensive network infrastructure upgrade.

The project, executed in partnership with Agile Networks and Juniper Networks, aims to meet the growing demands of modern live events and future-proof the stadium’s connectivity for many years to come.

Meeting the Digital Age Demands

Vincent Naughton, Head of IT at Aviva Stadium, recognised the need for a secure and resilient network infrastructure that could support the increasing scale of events and the integral role of digital engagement in the fan experience.

“With 51,000 people in the stadium, the demand on the network is such that it’s critical our infrastructure works when we need it to work and it has to be reliable, redundant and available,” Naughton explained.

The upgrade encompasses LAN switching, firewalling, cybersecurity, and Wi-Fi infrastructure, designed to serve all stakeholders including fans, staff, and media.

Cutting-Edge Technology Implementation

The new system features:

– Juniper Networks’ QFX5110 core switches and EX3400 edge switches for high-performance, low-latency data transmission

– SRX Series firewalls and Advanced Threat Prevention Cloud for robust network security

– State-of-the-art Wi-Fi 6 access points for seamless connectivity throughout the venue

– Marvis, Juniper’s AI-powered Virtual Network Assistant, for proactive issue resolution

Declan Goode, Account Manager at Agile Networks, highlighted the power of Marvis:

“With Marvis the user inputs in plain English the type of problem they’re trying to solve. Marvis will then use its AI engine to look for an answer to the query. In 95% of the cases, Marvis will solve the problem.”

Enhancing Stadium Operations and User Experience

The upgraded network supports a wide range of critical operations, including:

– Digital ticketing validation

– Cashless payment systems for food and beverage purchases

– Management of big screens and IPTV infrastructure

– Security operations through CCTV and PTZ cameras

– High-bandwidth media broadcasting

– Enhanced social media sharing capabilities for fans

“The benefits of our upgraded network are substantial,” Naughton stated.

“Our new Wi-Fi provides exceptional resilience, handling peak usage seamlessly. With application awareness and improved response times, users enjoy a smoother, more reliable online experience.”

Looking to the Future

With this robust foundation in place, Aviva Stadium is exploring innovative ways to further enhance the fan experience. Potential future developments include improved queue management systems and enhanced experiences for visually-impaired guests.

As live events continue to evolve in the digital age, Aviva Stadium’s network upgrade ensures it remains at the forefront of providing unforgettable experiences for fans and performers alike.
